It was a Friday and I had not made a sale in weeks and I tried to think of new items I could add to my Etsy shop. I was wearing my new funny T-shirt “Hi, I’m Awkward.” I had already created 3 humor beach graphics earlier that day to pass the time, but wasn’t sure where I could put them. The 3 graphics included “Resting Beach Face” with a pair of trendy sunglasses in the color blue; “Not Your Basic Beach” with a Female symbol and a mermaid tail; and lastly a simple #MERMAID in blue.  I thought I could maybe sell the graphics as digital downloads, but who would want to buy just a humor beach graphic? How much could I really sell them for? So later that day I finally came to the conclusion that I would hire my good friends in the printing business to create t-shirts for me. I ordered 3 smalls, 3 mediums and 3 larges in each style and also made other larger sizes available upon request. The quality of the t-shirts are amazing, super thick breathable cotton. Because I don’t know about you, but I am irritated buying t-shirts for over $20 and they are so thin that you have to wear another shirt under it! The style is super cute too, sporty V-neck with long fitting body – perfect for beach days or lounging in with yoga pants. They are available right now on my Etsy shop for $25 each & Free Shipping!

We are all thankful to get this year over with, but what a strange New Years Eve! I watched the West Coast Countdown on YouTube last night and it was earie how the streets were so empty. The countdown included live video of various major cities on the West Coast in a collage type of setting. Cities like San Francisco, Santa Monica, Seattle and Las Vegas were featured. You saw very few people in the feed, if any. For instance, Santa Monica showed a fantastic light show on the Ferris wheel, but zero people. Las Vegas showed the iconic strip without a soul in sight. It was just a weird ending to a weird year. The feed just summed up the year exactly how the year had been for so many, depressing and isolating. As the countdown drew closer to midnight I decided to get out of bed and step outside – this is where things really came clear to me.

Ventura, CA is a relatively quiet beach town. In the mornings you can hear the roosters crow, in the afternoons you can hear the seagulls squabbling and at night you can smell the ocean air. Last night however, New Years Eve 2021 was a war zone of fireworks so loud your house shuttered. People in Ventura are so happy 2020 is over and done with. We’ve lost our favorite restaurants, travel was restricted even to our mountains and worse of all we have suffered human loss.

In 2020, you would turn on your TV and you were inundated by Corona Virus safety tips, numbers and statistics and the “what if’s”. Day in and day out – most of us turned off our TV’s and tried to make the best of the situation. Many neighbors started gardens, when they just had ugly yards for years prior. I saw “Martha Stewart’s” all over Facebook baking breads, creating face masks and lots of jokes about the toilet paper hoarding. That all would slightly fall off at the end of summer 2020. Instead we started ordering our groceries on Instacart, picking up curbside treats and watching a lot of Disney Plus. No one wanted to deal anymore with the Corona Virus.

I started upgrading my craft game. I started wood burning, polymer clay baking and painting. All this seemed to distract me from all the noise. I also had to remind myself that this not just happening to you. I had a pretty boring life before the virus, but at least I was able to go to the YMCA 3-4 times a week and swim out my aggression, but now the gyms are closed and I am antsy. I spent a lot of time lusting over beautiful handmade jewelry on Instagram, and wondered how I could make such beautiful pieces. Up until now I would get silver connectors and gemstones and glue them into the center, link them together and then add the finishing hardware. I wanted to do more than that, so then I came across beautiful detailed wire wrapping mixed with polymer clay! Holy moly I dove right into it and never came back up for air.

I started making and designing pieces entirely on my own, without existing pieces. A lot of time went into drawing out my pieces with the stones I had, molding and folding copper and silver wire and then sculpting the clay. It was all worth it when the pieces came out of the oven, they were so beautiful and 100% my handmade creation. I created labradorite pendants, minimalist moonstone and Australian Fire Opal necklaces. These creations really got me through this year and it also added an artsy story of sorts to my Etsy Shop. The very last piece I created in 2020 has a story just like the end of this weird year. My fire opal necklace is isolated on a silver chain, it shines in the light and has an explosion of colors when it hits the sun just right.

I have been vision impaired since I was 9 years old. The multiple strokes took my eyesight, hearing, ability to walk and turned me into an infant essentially. I went through years of therapy and regained most of what I lost, but my eyesight and hearing did not get restored. It’s been quite a long and unique journey these 26 rotations around the sun. Then the year 2020 arrives and my friend and neighbor says she used to make hula hoops and decorate them. (This was January/February, before anyone even knew anything about the Corona Virus/COVID-19/World-Wide Pandemic.) I have been thinking a long time about how to ease the heartbreak for women/girls whom recently lost their sight. The feeling is very isolating. So I thought If something was available to me that eased the transition and devastation of my loss of vision, and all the changes I would have to accept… I would have been in a better “place”. So I had my friend wrap my white cane and the idea was born! Designer white canes.

I just want to give young girls and newly impaired women a little piece of hope for their future. Because when you lose your sight you tend to feel like life is over. You miss opportunities with friends, you don’t get to enjoy life as you would as a fully sighted individual. If I had a cane like this, and not my boring red & white… things would have seemed a bit brighter. Yes, blind canes are typically red and white, but do they really have to be? If you see someone feeling the ground with a stick, you know it’s not an act or a costume.. it’s an instrument. Make the best out of a bad situation. Give someone a gift of hope.

2020 has been the year for a weird new fashion trend. Face mask are now in every color, material, pattern and size known to man. I didn’t jump on the mask making train and even when I did, I still stayed clear of making the actual masks themselves. It was however in the back of my mind of how I can be innovative and unique. Just keeping with my brand mindset. In late October 2020 I came up with a hair-brainer idea!

How many of you hate how many times you have to dig in your pocket, purse or wherever you keep your mask? Wouldn’t it be cool to just unhook from your ears and forget it? That’s why I made a lanyard, just like how grandma wore her glasses when she would take them off! Around her neck! Then to add another element to these lanyards, so I chose gemstone beads!

When I listed these originally, I didn’t have length options – I was just going to send every customer a 30″+ lanyard and I was so kindly reminded about how women don’t like to be boxed in and love as many options as possible. Same goes for the face mask! So I bought a variety of handmade face mask from a fellow Etsy shop owner. So I ended up with 10 different face mask options and 3 lanyard sizes! So now you can wear your face mask like a piece of jewelry! Just attach and un-attach the lanyard from the face mask to change or launder your face mask. Also, you’ll never have to dig around your purse anymore! Just pull it off your ears, drop it down and forget!

Early one morning of December 2020, I decided to disobey the lockdown and go camping with my dog Buddy. I gathered our supplies, gear and the food needed to sustain us for an overnighter. We soon found a perfect spot, flat with green luscious grass. I pulled out my tent and soon realized I had never set this particular tent up by myself before. It was 45 minutes and a YouTube video later when I finally set up the tent. I about had an aneurism trying figure that out on my own, thank God for YouTube! After the tent was up I placed my gear inside and organized it all. It was a typical set up with a few modern conveniences. My favorite item was a 500w Solar Generator by Audew. Next I needed to gather some firewood (Watch video to see what I really burned LOL). Once the fire was going I cooked up chicken fajitas and cauliflower (I’m on a strict renal diet). While the fire was cooking my lunch and the sun was still up, I decided to  make a large batch of sun tea.

Lunch was a bit bigger than my stomach so I shared a few pieces of chicken with Buddy. I’m not sure he even chewed it, but it was more like he inhaled it. After lunch it was time to relax and unwind. I climbed into my tent and pulled out my beads, bead board and the materials I would need to make a new piece of jewelry. I designed a beautiful Green Onyx & Peridot beaded necklace to add to my Etsy Boutique. Then I finally took a nap and woke up in the darkness. In Southern California this time of year it gets dark around 4:30 pm. Since it was dark and I was still full from lunch, I decided to skip dinner and just make a hot cup of peppermint tea – then call it a night. In the morning I stoked the fire and boiled water for instant oatmeal and hot tea. Buddy had a rough night because of the low temperatures over the night. I packed up my camp and went home.

Beaded Green Multi Gemstone & Carved Onyx Peridot Pendant Necklace

It was a cold day at the beach, I really did not feel like going out and freezing my behind off. Instead I decided I would make a cup of hot tea and create a few new pieces for my Etsy boutique. I had purchased five rainbow moonstone cabochons, five omega silver chains and silver polymer baking clay a few weeks ago. They had all coincidentally arrived earlier that day. I had a plan to put all these elements together in a way I had not tried before. I have done tons of beading, chunky silver pieces and such. These piece were all so beautiful on their own. I wanted to create something more simplistic, a minimalist style piece. I decided I would bake the stone onto the omega silver chain, as if it were floating.

I set the oven at 275ºF and grabbed my omega silver chain, a small piece of the silver polymer baking clay and a stone. I laid my chain out straight and found my center (I double checked my center later on). I took my small piece of clay and pressed it onto the back of the rainbow moonstone cabochon. I evened out the clay to only stay on the back of the stone and not go over the edges. Once I did this, I picked up my chain and checked the center again and pressed the chain into the back of my stone. I pinched the clay over the chain and evened it out. Once I was satisified with the results I placed it on my cookie sheet with the stone facing down. I made four more the same way and placed the cookie sheet in the oven for 15 minutes.

Once I took the cookie sheet out I let cool for a few minutes. I then grabbed a 4 in 1 nail block you would use to shape, smooth, buff and shine your fingernails with. I shaped the hard clay and removed any excess around the edges. Then I smoothed it out, buffed and polished. Lastly, I took my glossy spray sealer and gave the hardened clay a protective layer against moisture and a glossy shine.
